Transfiguration: Rachel Libeskind and the Tiffany Window
Art exhibition and program at Akron Art Museum.
This exhibition brings together a beautifully restored stained glass window created over a century ago with brand-new artwork by contemporary artist Rachel Libeskind. The centerpiece is a historic Tiffany window originally designed for an Akron church in 1917, featuring the Transfiguration of Christ. Thanks to community supporters and expert restoration work, this irreplaceable piece is now on display for everyone to experience. Libeskind has created new work specifically responding to the window, inviting visitors to explore how spiritual transformation and the unseen are captured across different art forms, time periods, and cultures.
The exhibition creates a contemplative environment with darkened galleries framed by layered silk curtains that echo the glass techniques used in Tiffany windows. The restored window itself glows with special lighting at the heart of the space. Through collage, installation, video, and sculpture, Libeskind draws on her own background visiting European churches to examine how images hold meaning across centuries. A key theme throughout is the chrysalis—symbolizing the mysterious process of transformation. This is a thoughtful experience suited for older children and adults interested in art history, craftsmanship, and spirituality.
