Geology of the Ledges

Geology of the Ledges

Explore rock formations and geological history on a guided nature hike.

Ever wonder how those dramatic sandstone cliffs at Liberty Park came to be? This guided walk takes you on a journey back 250 million years with a naturalist who'll explain how the ledges formed and what makes up the Sharon conglomerate rock layer. You'll gain a real appreciation for why these geological features matter—it turns out they're home to one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the entire park district. This program welcomes adults, teens, and seniors for an in-person experience. If you have questions before heading out, the Nature Realm Visitors Center is happy to help at 330-865-8065 (they're open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.).
